Imagine a region’s Big Annual Events suddenly including a circus theme. In Geneva, Switzerland, that’s the Lake Parade in July, the fire-works-capped extravaganza called Fêtes de Genève in August, and the Russin Wine Harvest Festival in September.
Then tack a circus-related highlight on some other magnets like the Versoix Chocolate Festival in March, and December’s 'International Show Jumping in Geneva'; program in museum and gallery exhibits, circus movies, even the prestigious Swiss-French symphony Orchestre de la Suisse Romande which on December 15 will be playing to Charlie Chaplin’s silent 1928 movie classic The Circus – and a better feel for World Circus Year 2010 emerges.
Finally: add on hundreds of international circus acts, including performances by circus school students, not to mention full-fledged, big-top circuses making their regular yearly appearances in the city like Nock, Starlight and Switzerland’s national circus, Knie. Throw in some World Circus special-label wines and chocolate created especially for the occasion, a special Swiss Federal Railways train in service throughout the year, and the launch on May 6 of a new Swiss circus-themed postage stamp, and the picture is complete.
